According to the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), the REvil ransomware group has been “liquidated.”
Reports from the Russian media state that the country’s major security agency searched 25 addresses in the cities of Leningrad; Lipetsk; Moscow; and St. Petersburg and seized assets totaling more than $5.6 million (426 million rubles).
According to a statement from the FSB, “reporting about the leader of the criminal community and his involvement in encroachments on the information resources of foreign high-tech companies by introducing malicious software, encrypting information and extorting money for its decryption” was the driving force behind the attack.
However, despite the reported takedown of a well-known ransomware operator, other organizations continue to attack with impunity, and REvil is no longer what it once was. For instance, Herjavec Group’s LockBit 2.0 profile and its vast list of LockBit 2.0’s victims show that LockBit 2.0 is prospering.
