In September 2021, some components on the Karakurt website were updated and it is when Karakurt is known to be operational.
According to Accenture Security, this hacking team has infected over 40 computers in multiple countries. In order to make additional pressure during extortion attempts, the threat group generally communicates with the victim several times by using multiple platforms.
With moderate to high confidence, Accenture Security believes the threat group’s extortion strategy includes some things to avoid, drawing attention to its activities. Subsequent extortion and data exfiltration appear to be the primary goal of the attack organization.
Currently, Accenture Security is aware of at least 40 victims from various industries and sizes. The Karakurt organization doesn’t focus on a certain industrial segment or size. Ninety-five percent of identified victims live in North America, while the other five percent are from Europe.
