IRA Financial Trust announced on Feb 8 that it uncovered a suspicious activity affecting a small proportion of their clients having accounts on a crypto exchange; Gemini.
After learning about it, they initiated an inquiry right away and informed provincial and national authorities. According to the source, unidentified hackers allegedly stole $15 million worth of Ethereum and $21 million worth of Bitcoin from IRA Financial Trust users’ accounts on the very same day.
Chainalysis Inc., a blockchain monitoring business, said that it was following the $36 million of cryptocurrency taken from IRA users and that it was being flushed through Tornado, a “mixer” company.
Maria Stagliano, an IRA Finance spokesperson, said that the company’s inquiry is focused mainly on security measures that IRA Financial says Gemini did not give or make available.
Gemini claimed it had not been hacked and offered to help IRA Financial Trust inquire. Users of IRA Financial who posted in Reddit Inc. forums reported that their cryptocurrency accounts were emptied, with stolen money being sent to a Roth IRA account named “Benjamin Choe.”
The Choe account’s funds were then routed to companies frequently used in cryptocurrency laundering.
