Last week, we witnessed a massive Robinhood data breach, resulting in a few million pieces of data for sale in hacker forums. Pakistan hackers used Facebook to compromise the privacy of Afghan users, while Europe and the US faced a newly emerged Sharkbot Trojan attacking Android users. Now let’s see what happened last week.

Robinhood, a popular investment platform, experienced a massive data breach last week. After the attack, the threat actor involved in the hack announced selling the data of 7 million Robinhood users. The data includes 7 million email addresses and 2 million full names. There are also a few hundred users with more sensitive data exposed. Plus, hackers managed to obtain around 4400 phone numbers.

Pakistan hackers used Facebook to target Afghan people with connections to Afghanistan’s previous government. The group known as SideCopy shared links to malware websites for surveilling the devices of targeted individuals. It used fake accounts to lure users into clicking on links and downloading malware. As a result, Facebook blocked SideCopy and a few other malicious groups from Syria and Pakistan.

Hackers compromised the FBI email system on Saturday and sent tens of thousands of messages warning of a cyberattack. Luckily, the FBI quickly turned off the affected systems. The organization claims that hackers didn’t compromise nor access any personally identifiable data during the attack.

Researchers have discovered a new trojan called SharkBot that infiltrates Android handsets of users across Europe and the US. The trojan manages to bypass multi-factor authentication controls and intercept a device. Cybercriminals use this malware to steal funds from vulnerable Android handsets.

The Cyberspace Administration of China suggested that companies with share listings in Hong Kong should apply for cybersecurity inspections if they handle any national security data.
Companies with more than 100 million users will have to be reviewed by third parties and gain the government’s approval. This also applies to companies with headquarters abroad. Such requirements can have a significant effect on the privacy of their users.
