Owing to the pandemic outbreak, QR codes are indeed a popular tool to connect. However, the FBI said in an advisory that the smart tiny bar codes matrix could readily tamper and then be used to redirect users to potentially malicious websites.
According to the FBI advisory, a user scans something they believe is a valid code, but that is the tampered one which takes them to a malicious site, urging them to input login and financial information. Having accessibility to this victim’s credentials allows a cybercriminal to possibly take funds from the victim’s account.
FBI Tips To Avert QR code scam:
• A malicious domain name may be identical to the original URL but with a misplaced letter or typos.
• Look for signs that a sticker has been placed over the original code.
• Do not download an application through a QR code but from the app store
• Downloading a QR code scanner app increases your risk of being hacked.
• Avoid making payments to a website that can be accessed using a QR code.
